If anything, COVID-19 has at least made one term as famous as the most used term “lockdown”. And that is “WFH” or “Work-from-home”. With almost 100% of the schools, colleges and offices trying to make their online presence felt using technology (that they seldom used before); WFH is the new trend or the new norm.
But – are you really happy about it? I mean, for sure in the initial days it all seemed like a dream come true, like a honeymoon. No more nit-picking boss; no more hassles to get ready for office or you would miss that cab and voila!! No more need to take that shower. Ain’t it paradise?
But (yes, another but) the reality is sinking in now. And let’s be realistic. We do miss our old office misdemeanours; don’t we? That chit chat, those smoking breaks, our work-buddies?
Corporates are taking drastic measures. Google announced 100% work for home till July 2021. Apparently, only 8% of its staff said that they want to return back to the multi-billion dollars world-class facilities (that were built in the first place to keep the employees away from home and still not miss any facilities/ amenities). So, where does it leave everyone? Companies who did not own any real estate – can now save a bomb in rental savings but companies who have invested so much on owning their office buildings – may end up eating up on the maintenance of those lavish facilities.
On the other end of the spectrum, there are studies that claim that WFH is an overkill and all those spouse jokes where man and wife go for each other’s throat are coming to life. Divorces/ separations are on the rise, domestic violence is on the rise, child distress calls are on the rise. Generation X cannot adjust with Generation Y; Generation Y is having difficulty dealing with Generation Z and who knows what will happen to Generation Alpha, Beta and Theta? Strange!!
What’s your story? Are you all in for WFH? Do comment.
